Personal Challenge: Breaking down the basics, "Kayaking 101"

If you’re new to kayaking and have been hesitating about getting on the water because you need a refresher on the basics, we have the tutorial video for you! Check out this beginner kayaking how to - WATCH THIS BEFORE YOU GO KAYAKING | Kayaking 101 produced by Dan Arbuckle of the ever popular Headwaters Kayak Youtube Channel. This channel is overflowing with tutorial and how to videos on all things paddling. The Kayaking 101 video was shot on Lake Watson in Prescott, AZ and showcases the go-to, super beginner-friendly Eddyline models, the most stable sit-inside, our Sandpiper, and the sit-on-top Caribbean.

Here are some of the basics according to Dan:

Bring a kit to outfit you for success
Sun protection, life jacket, water shoes, a hat, sunglasses, a paddle and a kayak. Maybe bring a water bottle too!

Getting in and out of your kayak
Watch the video to see these options!

Don’t look like a newbie
Adjust your foot pegs for optimal power and performance. Get up on your sit bones. Don’t push your weight too far backwards of the center of the boat. Be in an upright position.

How to hold a paddle
Hold the paddle with a paddlers box. This will help you transfer power from your body, to the blade, and to the water to propel you forward. Think about the angle of the power face.

Forward stroke
Drop the blade in the water close to the nose or bow of the boat. Top hand is pushing. Bottom hand pulls. Rotate with the core to drive forward. Avoid the death grip.

Look where you want to go
Look away from the obstacle and you’ll get where you want to go.

These are just a few summary tips. For best results, hear it directly from the source and watch that video on repeat until you have the concepts memorized. See you on the water soon!
